Yanmar Diesel UTV Daily Checks
Yanmar diesel UTVs are rugged, hard-working machines that can handle your heavy lifting and take you off the beaten path. To ensure your UTV is running at peak performance, it’s important to perform this series of daily maintenance checks prior to operation.
Daily Checks for Yanmar Diesel UTVs
Daily maintenance on your diesel UTV only takes a few minutes and will keep it running strong for years to come. Follow along as we cover each check and instructions for what to do.
Check Engine Oil
Prior to checking the engine oil, run your UTV briefly to get the oil up to operating temperature. Be sure to turn it off before actually performing the check. To locate the oil dipstick, pull the handle on the bed and lift the bed up. Wipe around the area of the dipstick with a clean rag to prevent any dirt or debris from getting in the tube. Then, pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean. Reinsert the dipstick and pull it out again, confirming the oil level is between the minimum and maximum marks. Add or drain oil as necessary.
Check Air Filter
Next in line is the air filter, also found under the bed. Locate the two silver tabs and pop them open. Grab the air filter cover and gently twist and pull it off. Then, pull out the air filter itself. Give it a brief inspection for damage like holes or large debris stuck in the filter. Reinstall the filter and the filter cover, ensuring everything fits snugly.
Check for Leaks
Moving on, check around the engine for any oil or fuel leaks. One area to pay special attention to is the fuel injection lines. If you do notice any leaks, take the UTV to your local Yanmar dealer to get it repaired.
Check Coolant and Brake Fluid
To check the UTV’s coolant and brake fluid, head to the front of the machine and open the hood. Underneath the hood there are two access panels. In the panel on the left side you’ll find the reservoir for the engine coolant. Visually inspect this reservoir to make sure coolant levels are reaching the top of the high line. If low, add coolant as necessary. When complete, reinstall the panel cover.
Safety Note: Always stop the engine and allow the radiator to cool before removing the coolant cap.
Next, move to the right panel where the master cylinder is located. Take the cover off to access the master cylinder. Then, look on the side of the cylinder for the minimum and maximum line. Your fluid should be somewhere between those lines. Add or remove brake fluid as necessary and reinstall the panel cover.
Safety Note: If the brake fluid level is under the limits shown on the tank, fill the brake fluid and make sure there are no leaks. If in doubt, go to your local Yanmar dealer for repairs.
Check the Brakes
The checks under the hood are complete, so close it up and move on to the brakes. On the inside of each of the wheels, inspect the discs for any deep gouges or scratches. Also check the brake pads to ensure they have at least 1.5 mm of thickness left in them. If you identify any issues, take the vehicle to your local Yanmar dealer immediately.
Check Tire Pressure and Walk Around
While you’re working with the tires, check their pressure at the same time. On an empty machine, each tire should be inflated to 14.5 PSI. If the machine is full and you’re carrying a load in the back, the tire pressure should be adjusted to 21.7 PSI.
With the tires properly inflated, do a quick walk around of the vehicle. Watch for anything loose or hanging from the machine that could fall off during operation. Regularly review the tightening torque of the screws of the vehicle, paying special attention to the suspension, bushings, wheel spindles, driveline, steering, and brakes.
Check Inside the Cab
Heading inside the cab, start by checking the seat belts. Inspect the webbing first for any rips or tears. Then, confirm the latch works by buckling and unbuckling. Finally, make sure the retention system works, pulling the seat belt out slightly and giving it a firm tug until it locks.
Next, climb into the driver’s seat of the cab and check the brake pedal for any sponginess and that it returns to the top when you depress it. After that, move to the accelerator pedal and do the same thing. With checks of both pedals complete, turn the power on and check the panel to confirm all of the lights come on. This includes checking the seat belt, transfer lock, differential lock, head lights, turn signals, and horn.
